Researchers at London University College set a world record in the transmission of Internet data – 1,125 terabits per second, which is 50,000 times faster than in the current broadband Internet. In other words, at this speed all the series of “Game of Thrones” in HD-quality can be downloaded in less than 1 second.

To achieve this speed, researchers had to take advantage of the latest advances in information theory. Today, the transmission rate is limited by the final signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Applying advanced methods of digital signal processing to SNR, the throughput was increased many times.

In other words, the team determined the most efficient way of converting data into optical signals, taking into account the existing limitations in the receiver and the transmitter. They then applied noise reduction techniques commonly used in wireless communication, already to optical transmission. Thus, scientists provided the signal transmission with minimal distortion. The results of the research were shared by one of the team leaders, Dr. Robert Maher:

“USING THE HIGH BANDWIDTH OF SUPER-RECEIVERS ALLOWS YOU TO CREATE A POWERFUL CHANNEL THAT WORKS LITERALLY IN” ONE BREATH. ” SUCH CHANNELS ARE PRIMARILY NEEDED FOR BASIC OPTICAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS, WHICH ENSURE THE TRANSFER OF LARGE VOLUMES OF INFORMATION BETWEEN CITIES, COUNTRIES AND CONTINENTS. “
