Billie Eilish is, officially, pop’s newest superstar. Her 2019 debut is one of the most streamed records ever, she has a contract with Calvin Klein, and she can count Katy Perry and Diplo as superfans.
Read on as we dive deep into her meteoric rise!
First off, an insane reminder: Eilish is only 17. She debuted in 2015 with the woozy “ocean eyes.” The cut was originally written by her older brother, Finneas O’Connell, for his band. (Today, they write almost every song together.) Pretty innocuous right?
The single gained stream on SoundColoud, and the subsequent music video directed by Meghan Thompson really broke through. The song got attention from the likes of Vogue, Stereogum, and Billbord.
13 Reasons Why
That bubbling success led to Eilish’s continued work with her brother and an EP of “Ocean Eyes” remixes from artists like Cautious Clay and Astronomyy. And when Eilish was featured on the soundtrack for 13 Reasons Why, she broke through to the mainstream.
Don’t Smile At Me
Her debut EP of originals arrived in 2017. Called Don’t Smile At Me, she rolled it out by dropping a new song each week in the lead up. The set featured cut like “Bellyache,” “Copycat,” and “Watch.”
13 (More) Reasons
Eilish was also featured on the second 13 Reasons Why soundtrack, which dropped in 2018. She and Khalid teamed up on the cinematic “Lovely,” Which eventually went platinum. (The video has been streamed over 300 million times.) Meanwhile, Elish started touring and recording new music.
Last July, Eilish released the first single off her then-upcoming debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? The skittish and foreboding “you should see me in a crown” topped out at 41 on the Billboards Hot 100, and the handful of cuts that followed had her fans in a fever pitch of anticipation. When the set finally landed in March 2019, it did so to critical acclaim and bowed at No.1 on the Billboard 200.
The album smashed all kinds of records. Eilish is the first artist born post-2000 to have a number one album in the US, and the youngest female to chart at number one in the UK ever. People are here for Billie.
